MinuteMap
MinuteMap Data Sources
Every official, live, cached, scheduled, computed, and estimated value is labeled. This page documents each source, its use, refresh pattern, fallback behavior, and limitations.
MTA GTFS schedules
Agency: MTA. Used for subway, SIR, LIRR, and Metro-North stops, active service, directed ride edges, and scheduled travel times. The graph refreshes from the current published feeds; if compilation fails without a valid cache, routing fails closed. A schedule does not prove that a trip is operating.
MTA GTFS-Realtime
Agency: MTA. Used for matched trip updates and service alerts. Relevant services are requested for a calculated itinerary and briefly cached. When a trip cannot be matched confidently, MinuteMap keeps the itinerary labeled scheduled.
MTA Bus Stops open data
Agency: MTA via New York State Open Data. Used for official bus stop identity, coordinates, route membership, and in-effect/revenue-stop flags. Successful responses are cached for a bounded period and delayed fallback is labeled. This source does not verify curbs, sidewalks, boarding gaps, or vehicle accessibility.
MTA Bus Time SIRI
Agency: MTA. Used for ordered bus directions, onward calls, advisories, and live predictions when the configured feed is available. Bounded retries and a short delayed cache prevent an upstream failure from becoming a live claim. A prediction is not evidence that a particular vehicle or street boarding path is step-free.
NYC Ferry GTFS and GTFS-Realtime
Agency: NYC Ferry. Used for landings, routes, schedules, trip updates, and alerts. Ferry routing is omitted if the required schedule cannot be compiled. Street connections to other modes are derived from coordinates and are not verified pedestrian-accessibility paths.
MTA Subway Stations
Agency: MTA via New York State Open Data. Used for station IDs, complexes, services, coordinates, and official full or directional ADA classifications. MinuteMap attempts a bounded refresh every five minutes and refuses current routing after two hours without a valid snapshot; a last-known-good copy is labeled when retained.
MTA Elevator and Escalator Equipment
Agency: MTA. Used to connect equipment, stations, pathway descriptions, and redundancy evidence. MinuteMap refreshes the feed every two minutes. Records without reliable official station identifiers are excluded rather than guessed.
MTA Current Equipment Outages
Agency: MTA. Used for reported out-of-service equipment, reasons, dates, expected return, and official alternatives. MinuteMap refreshes every two minutes and labels cached or unavailable evidence. Unreported obstructions cannot appear.
OpenStreetMap via Photon
Mapped NYC restaurants, shops, parks, and landmarks supplement NYC Planning addresses. OpenStreetMap contributors supply community map data; coverage and freshness vary. Search text goes through the MinuteMap server to Photon and is not stored server-side.
NYC Planning GeoSearch
Agency: NYC Department of City Planning. Used only for address and landmark autocomplete after three characters. Search text is not stored as a route-research record. The connection to transit is an estimate rather than a verified pedestrian path.
Last successful retrieval
The interactive page shows session-specific retrieval timestamps. Those volatile values are visible to users but excluded from search snippets; the server does not invent a retrieval time when none is available.
Update freshness and fail-closed behavior
Each interactive status identifies whether evidence is live, scheduled, modeled, cached, or unavailable. Missing or overly stale evidence is not silently treated as proof that an accessibility path or fallback is usable.
Known limitations
Official feeds do not continuously verify every station entrance, internal transfer, curb, sidewalk, vehicle boarding condition, or unreported obstruction. MinuteMap labels these boundaries where they affect a journey.

Station inventory is static source data. A feed version date is not a retrieval time.
